The United States Postal Service (USPS) is looking to add 66,000 EVs to its delivery fleet over the next five years in a move to reduce its reliance on fossil fuel-powered cars.
In its press release, it mentioned that it is looking at adding a total of 106,000 vehicles at the cost of $9.6 billion. Initially, it had wanted to buy only 84,000 vehicles of which 40 per cent would be EVs before it revised its spending.
The Verge notes that the service had received $3 billion from the US government as part of the Inflation Reduction Act. Its decision had also been because of the push back it received from Democrats who were pushing for more emission-free modes of transportation in the country.

After this batch, from 2026 onward, USPS says that it will only buy EVs in other to meet up with the call for all federal services to buy only emission-free vehicles from 2035. This purchase of EVs places the service on a fast-track to a fully electrical fleet.
While it hinted at patronising several EV makers, USPS will buy most of the vehicles it needs from government defense contractor, Oshkosh, at least about 45,000 of them. It has not revealed which company will supply the remaining 21,000 EVs.
In addition to buying electric vehicles, the service is also investing in charging infrastructure, which will include tens of thousands of charging stations. Currently, USPS has over 217,000 trucks but many of these are more than 30 years old and lack the features that newer vehicles come with.
