Volvo Brings New Safety Upgrade To Cars In Europe

Volvo has now brought the Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) technology to everyone across Europe. It was first installed in some of its vehicles in 2016. Previously limited to Sweden and Norway, the new tech aimed to help people avoid accidents.

 

On Monday, 15th April 2019, Volvo announced the expansion of its Slippery Road Alert and Hazard Light Alert to the rest of Europe. This new upgrade will be standardised on all 2020 model Volvos. Some cars of 2016 and after models might also get this new technology.

 

With the new V2V technology, when a driver turns on the hazard light or gets on a slippery road, it will send information to the cloud. This will, in turn, alert other drivers coming in that direction. The warning to other drivers headed that way will help to reduce the chances of other cars getting involved in a crash. It can also work like Google Maps to warn other drivers of impediments on the road.

No limits ahead

The technology is not only for cars but for trucks as well. There will be a warning exchange between vehicle and cars to make sure that everyone is safe. They have also invited other automobile companies to share data using the technology to increase its reach and make the roads safer for all.

 

Volvo urges other researchers and car companies to use their past research as a base to work on better safety measures too. It revealed that they had opened a research library where their work had been archived. The research dates back from the 1970s to 2018.

 

Earlier this year, Volvo announced that it intends to fit 112-mph speed limiters on all Volvo vehicles, starting from the 2021 models. It also said it will begin fitting driver monitor cameras on some models in 2020. This monitor should slow down and stop a driver if they appear to be drunk or distracted.
