Accidents happen and, in an unfortunate situation where they happen to you, you need to take proactive steps to repair them. Here are some steps to take when you accidentally spill a liquid on your computer.

Liquid spill on laptop

If you have spilt a liquid (like water or juice) on your computer, time is of the essence. You need to act fast.

First, you must turn it off, unplug it and remove the battery immediately. Make sure you do a force shut down. Press and hold the off button to turn it off. Then, remove all easily detachable components like a mouse, cables, flash drives and DVDs.

Thirdly, dry it outside. Open it as far as it will go and hold it upside down. Wipe off the liquid content from the surface with a dry towel. Water will most likely cause less damage than sugary or alcoholic drinks. You can dab some alcohol in a cotton bud to get the wetness out.

Now, leave it to air-dry for two to three days in a warm dry place. You can put it under a fan. Don’t use a hair dryer because that can complicate the issue. Once you have done this, it is important that you get it to the repair shop as soon as possible. It helps if you have a warranty you can take advantage of.

If you use a laptop with a built-in battery, like a MacBook, you need to take it for repairs immediately. But before then, hold it upside down and wipe any visible wetness with a dry towel. An excellent option will also be to put the laptop in a big bag of rice. Rice has absorbent qualities that will suck out all the moisture over time.

As a preventive measure, safeguard your laptop by getting a waterproof silicone or clear plastic keyboard cover.
