WhatsApp has announced that it is introducing a ‘disappearing messages’ option in November 2020. Disappearing messages, when enabled on conversations. will allow WhatsApp to automatically delete the messages after seven days.

The feature is also available in group chats, as group admins can enable disappearing messages in group chats. Telegram has a similar feature which allows users to even set time limits for when they want the messages deleted.

“We’re starting with 7 days because we think it offers peace of mind that conversations aren’t permanent while remaining practical so you don’t forget what you were chatting about. The shopping list or store address you received a few days ago will be there while you need it, and then disappear after you don’t,” a WhatsApp spokesperson said in a statement.

In addition to deleting messages for both parties in the conversation, the disappearing messages feature also delete pictures and videos after seven days.

To use the feature, you’ll need to enable it for each contact or group. This means you cannot make all your messages with your contacts disappear, you have to enable it individually for each chat. It also won’t wipe older messages as it only applies to messages sent and received after enabling the feature.

WhatsApp will begin rolling out the disappearing messages feature to all its users this November. It will be interesting to see how unique it will be from the Telegram version.
