WhatsApp will soon bring an auto-destruct feature for messages and it will be only available for groups. The main reason behind this innovation is to de-clutter messages in WhatsApp groups that nobody may read.

The option will offer time preset options for auto-destructing messages on groups but this feature won’t make it to individual chats.

According to information from WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is bringing the ability for messages to auto-destruct only on WhatsApp groups. The recent test versions of WhatsApp already received a new feature for both Android and iOS, called ‘Delete Messages.’

Initially, the auto-destructing feature was expected to be available for both individual chats and group chats. However, the feature will now only be available to group chats and it will make things easier for group admins.

With the auto-destructing Messages feature, group admins are now able to select a specific duration for messages on the group and once a message passes the specified duration, it will automatically be deleted by the app.

This feature is currently still in the testing stage and it could take some time before the feature makes it to the stable version.

Auto-Destruct feature differs from the delete messages feature

This feature is very different from the ‘Delete for Everyone’ feature that currently exists for all chats. The Delete for Everyone feature, however, will still be available for all messages. WhatsApp users will still be able to use it to delete a text before the receiver sees it.

This ‘Delete Messages’ feature will be accessible only on group chats. This will make it easy for the admins to manage old messages and chats. It is also important considering that WhatsApp messages normally take up space on devices as well as increase the space needed for online backups.

Since group chats have a lot of exchanges, old messages at times become irrelevant and it becomes sensible to delete them after a while. So far, users had to delete those messages manually and this process can be cumbersome.
