Afropop superstar Wizkid on October 18 2021 sat down for an interview with The Rolling Stone. 

The singer, real name Ayo Balogun told Conteh about the faith contrast in his home; his father, a Muslim and his mother a Christian pastor who drafted his uncles, aunties and other relatives into the choir. According to the musician, he started off music playing instruments and singing in the church choir.

Wizkid, 31 also spoke on his collaboration with dancehall star Damian Marley (who was also on the interview) on the track “Blessed” which he says is his favourite track off his “Made In Lagos” album.

According to the “Essence” crooner, the deep love Nigerians have for Bob Marley and the Rastafarian culture inspired him to take a special interest in the reggae genre.

They met in 2018 when in a New York City hotel while Damian Marley was promoting “Stony Hill”, his 2018 Grammy winner for Best Reggae Album. The latter was immediately taken by Wizkid.

“Wiz’s melodies are off the chain,” Marley, 43, said.

As for Wizkid, it was destiny that they crossed paths. “Meeting him in New York, it was just like it was written,” he said.

“When I got the call to be a part of the project — Made In Lagos—, I was honored,” Marley says. “As a Jamaican, as Rasta, we definitely have a great affinity toward his culture. We are definitely big fans of anything African.”
