Work From Home: Amazon Extends Remote Work Policy To 2021 For Corporate Employees

Online shopping market platform, Amazon has announced extending its remote work policy to allow corporate employees work from home until January 2021. This decision may be a pointer that the tech company sees remote work as more than a temporary phase.

In the US, lifting the lockdown procedures had led to the cases of COVID-19 spiking. This is also not only happening in the US. For example, in Spain, the authorities have resumed lockdown in the Catalonia region after their coronavirus cases surged recently.

Other tech firms like Google and Facebook have previously announced that their employees will work remotely until the end of 2020. Fujitsu had upped its remote working policy for its over 80,000 employees as well.

Microsoft had taken a big step as well by closing all its 83 physical stores in the US; choosing to focus more on its online stores instead.

A spokesperson from Amazon had said about its recent remote working decision:

“We continue to prioritize the health of our employees and follow local government guidance. Employees who work in a role that can effectively be done from home are welcome to do so until January 8th.

“We have invested significant funds and resources to keep those who choose to come to the office safe through physical distancing, deep cleaning, temperature checks, and by providing face coverings and hand sanitizer.”

Warehouse employees had protested against Amazon in past months after some workers allegedly tested positive for coronavirus. Again, this new policy doesn’t permit the warehouse staff of Amazon to work from home.

Recognising the importance of its warehouse workers, Amazon had announced rewarding them in June. Yet, this may not be enough to avoid another internal protest in the coming weeks.
