Zoom has announced that it would increase its standard 40-minute limit on free video chats for Thanksgiving Day. The company says this will make it easier for people to spend time with friends and family virtually on the US holiday.

The varying degrees of lockdown and restriction of travel in the US means that many people won’t be able to observe the family holidays conventionally around the dining table but may have to rely on videoconferencing to keep in touch.

Zoom offers a 40-minute limit to all its basic plan customers and this means groups may have to restart a call to keep up the conversation. The restriction on basic plan customers is not just a Zoom thing. Google Meet and Cisco Webex offer both a 60-minute and 50-minute time limits respectively. To get more time and features (number of participants for example) the customers have to pay for enterprise-grade plans.

The company shared the Thanksgiving Day news on its Twitter page using the hashtag #ZoomTogether.

The company will only lift the 40-minute restriction temporarily though. From midnight on Thanksgiving Day 26th November 2020 to 6 AM ET 27th November 2020 Zoom basic plan customers can make unlimited minute calls. Let the celebrations begin!
